Credit unions are a great place to keep your checking account
Get Rich Slowly posted an article about how the Co-op network is another good reason to love your credit union. I have to agree. I have had my accounts at a credit union for about 10 years now and I’ve been nothing but happy with my decision. When we go in to do a transaction, there is never a line, and the people are genuinely friendly every time I go in. Some of the tellers even know me by face, even though I only actually go into the bank a few times a year.
The article on Get Rich Slowly talks about the Co-op network of ATMs throughout the nation that Credit Union members can withdraw cash from with no fee (and in some of them, can even deposit to their accounts.) Our primary credit union is 100 miles from our house. I have not been inside one of those branches in at least 5 years. We do all our banking for that credit union at another credit union here that has a “sister” relationship with our primary one. Anything we can do there, we can do here. It’s great.
One of the things they didn’t mention in that article, though, that works very well for me, is that the Co-op network recently joined with 7-11 and now withdrawals at any 7-11 are fee-free. I don’t know about where you live, but here there are 7-11’s everywhere, so there is always a place to get cash without having to pay a fee.
I could go on about why we love our credit union, but I wanted to add that bit about the 7-11’s, since that’s a major source of free ATMs for us.

Color me confused, because I made a point of mentioning the 7-Elevens precisely because they nearly doubled the available terminal count in one go. Thus the gag about it being difficult to be more than 10 miles from one, I have four of them in my city.

MikeVx - You are right to be confused. I looked at the article again, and you were very clear about it and spent a whole paragraph on it! How I missed it in the first place, I don’t know. Maybe it was a slow brain day. =) Sorry about that!

“Brain and brain! What is brain?”
Not a problem, I was actually wondering if you had tripped over some obscure rendering bug or something. That’s the trouble with standards, there are so many to choose from.
In the mean time, I am getting a charge out of my first-ever guest blog article getting linked around the PF community. I came here from the trackback on GRS, and I’ve added you to my RSS bar.
